KSHB: Valve Repair Surgery Changes Course of Young Woman's Life After Dangerous Heart Infection
Katie Edwards was 28 years old when she was diagnosed with a heart infection that could have jeopardized her dream of having children. Then a second opinion from Saint Luke's changed everything.
1 minuteAt just 28 years old, Katie Edwards was diagnosed with endocarditis, a life-threatening infection of the heart.
An initial evaluation with another hospital called for a mechanical valve replacement that could have limited her from having children in the future—a dream for Katie and her husband.
Then she met with Dr. Russ Davis, cardiothoracic surgeon and surgical co-director at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. Instead of replacing the valve, he was able to repair it.
KSHB talked with Katie and Dr. Davis about Katie's diagnosis and the surgery at Saint Luke's that changed the course of her life.
